1:42 pm - holiday season costuming

sillyvash
SO! laura and i have visited the new cloth store. it is MASSIVE. it's a two-level cloth/craft store of almighty doom which will be very helpful for our upcoming projects. we're going to be tackling some more complicated costumes for movie releases and A-Kon 15.

also, i have some unfinished costumes that i would like to be done with once and for all. Yuki from fruits basket needs to be either completed or redone, because i used to work on it in class when i was exempt from exams at the end of my senior year. yikes. >_< invader zim has been sitting in the "to do" part of my closet even longer.

i haven't decided who i want to be for a-kon yet, but i have two or three clear ideas in mind that i'm most excited about working on...i just need a stud gun, and the cloth store of doom supposedly carries them.

we're currently working on a new page design (and by "we" i mean i watch laura do it and i tell her when i think something looks pretty) so watch for it in the next few weeks.

Today I made a muslin mockup for the Go Go jacket, and after I make some adjustments to it tomorrow, I'll cut my real fabric. I still need to adjust the winged collar and possibly the sides (depends on the weight of the fabric, I think), but it's looking really good so far.

Then I have to add in the red lines to the skirt and hem it, but that's pretty fast.

After that, I'll make the ball, and trim and style the wig. I'm also trying to figure out how to do the patch on the jacket -- should I just try to find something vaguely similar to it, or sew/make my own? And if it's the latter, how should I do it?

But after the jacket is sewn, all I have left are small tasks. I have some time on Tuesday between and after classes, so I'll probably be working then.

The skirt's almost done, all that's left is attaching the waistband and hemming the bottom. Oh, yeah, and sewing in lines of red, as seen here:

My cloth looks like this, by the way:

Just a quick preview of the Go Go wig, pre-trimming/styling, etc.

Cloth's ready to go, so I'm going to work on the skirt and jacket all during my midsemester break. I still need to buy white shoes and a chain for my hurty ball, but I think I have everything else covered. XDD

My current projects:

My (Japanese) rockstar persona - for fun and maybe Halloween too. It's really basic in that it only involves two modified kimono, obi (& parts), leg things, tabi socks and zori sandals, plus wig and accessories...all in red, white and black. Sue's doing her own persona in black and red, but I'll let her post about it. I made a muslin tonight to check sizes and stuff like that, but I need to finish it off by adding the 'band' that goes along the front edges and neck, and attaching the sleeves. I made a similar muslin once before, when I was planning to do a costume from the game Para Para Paradise, but I never made the actual costume. I still have the cloth for that, so I could probably throw it together pretty quickly (even though it was the slippery type of satin, and I'd have to hand paint flowers all over it). I'll keep that in mind for later...

Go Go Yubari (from Kill Bill Vol. 1) - for Halloween, also pretty easy. It's a pleated skirt and a blue blazer (two buttons, notched wing collar if I remember correctly)...I've never made a blazer before, so that ought to be an interesting experience, but I've got a basic pattern drafted already, so I'll just have to do a muslin mockup before I buy the cloth for that.

I did some pleating experiments earlier with some spare muslin, and I picked a fold pattern I think will work well, so I'm going to look for cloth and a zipper tomorrow.
Also, I'm going to go take a look at the costume shops and all of the 'Halloween warehouse' type of places, since I always need cheap wigs I can mutilate. I also have to find time to swing by the hardware store for a chain, and I'll need to figure out what to use for the ball part of that weapon. Man, I always want to work on the accessories first, because then I have something to gaze at (and play with XD) while I finish the rest. Ah, that reminds me, I'll also need to get shoes and white ribbed socks, and find one of my white collared shirts to finish it off.

I'm also making a Yuya cosplay outfit that I'll eventually force onto Monte's body, but for the time being I'm sizing it for me. I already have all of the cloth I'll (ever) need for the vest and skirt thingy, as well as black man pants and a white t-shirt. I tried looking at costuming sites for tips on chest binding, but the best stuff came from the pages of female-to-males; that's why I have man pants, for example -- they hang low on the hips and are looser in the leg, both of which will help hide female body shape. So aside from actually piecing together the vest and thingy, all I'll have to do is iron on patterns to the shirt, and paint them onto the vest. But then, the hair...

2:19 pm - hard at work!

sillyvash
i worked a lot on tsukasa last night. i pretty much taught myself how to make gloves by going through the process veeerrrryyyy slowly. also, i discovered that laura's hand has almost the same measurements of our client's, so now i have a hand model! yaaay! they're nearly finished but the two sides of each glove still need to be sewn together.

home depot on sunday or monday. i won't be able to work this weekend much due to graduation, but i have great confidence that everything will be completed by the wednesday due date.

5:32 pm - costuming like mad!

sillyvash
laura and i have been hard at work on completing our a-kon costumes for ourselves and the tsukasa commission.

for tsukasa: the pants are nearly complete, i'll cut the gloves and hat today.

columbia: i worked on the corset during school yesterday, and now it's about 50% done!

himemiya: i'll iron the trim to add today.

yuki: the sleeve is giving me bullshit. we'll see about that!

that's all in updates for now!

2:09 am - Woo XD

lollymclolly
Hello! It's been a long time since I've posted to this community, and now it's under a new name -- but it's still me, Laura! I've been doing a lot of costuming work, and a lot of webpage work. So far, here are the updates:

There are in-progress pics on the page, but they probably won't change until we're done with out costumes. Hopefully, that will be a week before A-Kon (which is one week from now -- yikes), so that we can do a kind of dress rehearsal, take all of our pics, and do the formatting so that they'll be ready for our portfolio. I'll be doing little updates here and there, but really, until after A-Kon, there's not much to do. And afterwards -- whoo, better watch out!

Hmm...in terms of my own costuming, the new news is that I'll be doing Sora from the Escaflowne movie after A-Kon, because it's really massive in terms of tasks, and there's no way to complete it in the way I truly desire, before the con. So, my definites list is: Miwako (Paradise Kiss), Robin (Witch Hunter Robin), Tohru (Fruits Basket) and Sakura Grey (D7 Peacemaker). Each is coming along well, but they each get their own paragraph.
Hooray for massive postsCollapse )

Phew...and that's just what I have planned for this month. ;__;

Next month, I'm thinking...Emeraude (MKR), Lain (the pinkish outfit from the opening and the club), Princess Leia (the classic first white one), and some 80's cartoon things (there are a lot...;__; me = nostalgic masochist)...so, ionno, we'll see. Wee! XD

10:19 pm - sewing madness!

sillyvash
i've been slacking on ALL of my costume work for the past week or so because...well...i've just been lazy, ok? shoot me dead!

but before you do that, let me tell how how much i did this weekend!
it was a theme show at rocky horror for easter, and since i was playing rocky i decided that it was BUNNY TIME! i whipped up a cute little white bunny costume just for the show. i made a hat, gloves, bunny feet (that had kind of a "loose socks" vibe), and a i made some additions to a white bra and skirt that i had.

i was SUPER-CUTE! if i do say so myself. ^_^ i was furry and fuzzy, and ooh! i had a sparkly egg hanging from each bunny ear. they both came off before the show was over, but what the hell, they were cute.

also! i put some major time into the tsukasa costume. ^_^ the skirt is completely finished, and now hangs on my window. work on the shirt can probably be finished by tomorrow or the next day. i sewed the sides and i'm almost ready to connect the sleeves.

boy i love progress. ^_^

8:56 pm - workin' my ass off!

sillyvash
OK~! i purchased cloth for tsukasa two days ago and the process has already begun! the belt is all done, a small step, but something that's behind me! i've started work on the pants too. as long as i just take each piece one at a time i won't get too overwhelmed and freaked out. sadly, i've had to postpone working on the columbia corset to handle tsukasa, himemiya and yuki all at once. himemiya is nearly finished! i just have to finish the black trim all around and put the little accessories and epaulets on the sleeves. it shall be done SOON! yuki was started today too. so far i just have parts of the shirt cut, i still have more to go, but it should be nothing after himemiya. v_v...
the webpage is also being updated, so give it a little look-see!

...i hope i haven't taken on too much...

11:50 pm - himemiya!

sillyvash
BOOYEAH! suzie the sewing machine is working wonders here! i went to the fabric store yesterday and bought red and black thread so i could continue working...as laura reminded me, only 2.5 months until a-kon! AAAAH! i mean..yes...everything is under control. i got my first costume commission about a week ago too. i'll start working on it this weekend as soon as i get payment so i can buy the cloth. it's tsukasa from .hack//SIGN. whee! good times.

...i haven't started yuki yet...but he's next. i just have to hem, line, make the collar, connect snaps, and get all of the little gold goodies.

it's all coming together though! WHEE!

9:53 pm - wigs!

sillyvash
the four wigs that laura and i ordered from www.amphigory.com came in late this afternoon. we both got long purple ones (himemiya and yaone), laura also got a yellow one (jeanne) and a white one (sora). they're just lovely and as beautiful as can be. i have to cut bangs into the himemiya one, and a shoulder length strand on each side.

...a-kon isn't looming yet, but we'll definitely be ready for it when it is!

10:33 pm - columbia top

sillyvash
yeah that's right! i haven't been COMPLETELY lazy all this time. i actually have been working on the columbia corset. unfortunantly, it looks like this project is going to take a lot longer than originally intended.

..as in, i started 2 weeks ago and i'm only on the 6th row of sequins. i mean, i haven't been working on it ALL the time, but i think i need to pick up the pace some before i'm no longer playing columbia! when it's done, i'll take pictures of the corset and action shots of me doing my thing in it. BOOYEAH!

1:14 am - Anticipating A-Kon.

elineryn
Well, neither of us went to Ushicon this weekend because we didn't want to pay the $35 (same price as A-Kon o_O) and have been spreading out our schedules in order to prepare for the summer.

Costumes in progress for A-Kon:
Laura:
Miwako (Paradise Kiss)
Sora (Escaflowne movie)

Sue:
Zim (Invader Zim) [Laura does have a Gaz costume, but might not wear it at A-Kon...we'll see]
Anthy Himemiya (Utena movie)

Laura & Sue together:
Tohru & Yuki (Fruits Basket)

We also will bring Kaworu and Yui, and Sue will have her Miki (Utena movie version) costume. We'll wear these during the less active hours, like earlier mornings and late at night.

Also, check out our webpage! We're really proud of it, even though we're stlil working on it. Above, I've listed the most immediate projects, but (especially on my page) you can see what other things are ongoing.

More to come!

2:21 pm - more himemiya!

sillyvash
ok i guess i'm on a roll costuming-wise this weekend. GO LONG WEEKENDS! anyway, i've managed to pin the whole thing together, and i'm discovering new things i'm going to have to adjust. for instance, the red sides need to be much lower so that the white fabric can connect over my shoulders, and there's just TONS of fabric to work with right now. after i start to get it more form fitting it should look much better.

it makes me feel good to know that if i were lazy, i would just leave the costume how it is right now...after all, i've seen worse! i just love the feeling of satisfaction that comes when i know the costume will look good!

2:18 am - himemiya stuffs!

sillyvash
ok it's a little event, but it made me super happy! i found the perfect himemiya shoes, and for super cheap too! not only that, but once they're used for himemiya, they're perfect floor show shoes for rocky, and then i can switch my floor show shoes into being my regular columbia shoes! i love it when accuracy works out for me this way. also, i decided to iron all of my himemiya cloth, (the last time i started i got a nice shiny burn across my hand) and it looks beautiful. tomorrow i plan on pinning it together, but i'm dreading working on it because i have no sewing machine. x_x

6:22 pm - happy new years eve

sillyvash
hello there! i trust everyone is having a great holiday. laura and i have been working on the website, it's now http://www.dualcosplay.com. go visit! it's great! it's not complete at all yet, but it's definitely getting there. our plans of taking new pictures were spoiled by a terrible thunderstorm and we were confined to the house, though we did get more text work done on the page.

i think. i dunno, laura actually does everything on the page, i just sit there and look over her shoulder and say "oooh...what that do?" and "ohhh....i see..." when in reality i see a bunch of slashes and random letters. well, thats my internet ignorance for you. html? yeah. ok. have a wonderful new year!

12:52 am - a merrry rocky christmas

sillyvash
i finally decided what to use for the columbia christmas costume today. i have no money because i have to buy christmas presents, so this proved to be exceptionally difficult. I bought a tight, small red shirt, and i'm in the process of covering it with small green sequins all over, and leaf shaped ones to line the top and bottom. this maintains columbia's glittery goodness without making me buy a new red corset. right now it's looking really good, but on one side there's about an inch of no sequins. also, i want to fill in any blank spaces and make it SUPA-GLITTERY!

my next task is to create a green sparkly garter. i'm sure you're thinking, "hey, what's with all the green?" but i have red thigh-highs, so don't fret, i have it allll under control! i was trying to find some normal green underwear for floorshow, but all i could find was uber expensive thongs, and that's just waaaayy too much of the sue!

i'll post pics a few days after the show, so everyone can see the whole process of making and wearing.
happy holidays!

A couple of smallish to medium-ish costume updates.

First of all, this weekend is Sue's Rocky Horror Christmas Theme Show, so we're both making costumes for that. Mine is going to be a corseted, sexy-type elf, and depending on the role she gets, hers will be a modified/embellished version of the character's outfit (probably) -- but I'll let her talk about that when she figures it all out.

Read my brief costume day summary.Collapse )

As always, photos are forthcoming.
